RED BULL KING OF THE ROCK COMES TO MIAMI
One-on-One Basketball Tournament to Give Top Miami Player a Spot at the Finals on Alcatraz
The Miami qualifier for Red Bull King of the Rock, a one-on-one basketball tournament where the finals are held on the island of Alcatraz. In 2010, Red Bull King of the Rock went down in history as the first official sporting event ever to be held on Alcatraz and the first time basketball had been played on The Rock since the inmates left the island over 50 years ago. Now in its third year, the global one-on-one basketball tournament will return with the most competitive field to date. Bigger and better than ever, Red Bull King of the Rock has expanded to qualifiers in 27 countries, including 33 in the United States. From these qualifiers, 64 finalists will head to the island to put it all on the line in The Yard on Alcatraz on September 22.
There are only two options: win and continue on, or lose and go home. Games will last five minutes and be subject to regulation hoops rules and scoring (two and three pointers). Only the first 64 players to register will be accepted into the competition, so players should arrive early if they want to compete. The qualifier is open to amateur and pros alike, however players must be 16 years of age or older to participate. Participants under the age of 18 will need to have a parent or guardian present to sign a waiver at the qualifier.
Red Bull will be teaming up with Li-Ning, Skull Candy, 24 Hour Fitness and Dime Magazine for this historic event.
Rules: Sixty-four of Miami’s most talented one-on-one basketball players fighting tooth and nail to earn a “golden ticket” to compete in the Finals on Alcatraz. Only the top player from Miami will advance. For info on competing click HERE

ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT – DOWN FT. LAUDERDALE’S NEW RIVER FOR RED BULL CANDOLA
Red Bull now accepting applications for teams to sail their own can-inspired gondolas
Press Release — Thousands of downtown Fort Lauderdale residents and visitors are expected to line the riverfront when the Red Bull Candola (can-doh-la) returns to the “Venice of America” for the second year on April 14, 2012. The city, known for its scenic canals, sense of fun and the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway, will host the event that offers home-grown ‘gondoliers’ the chance to race and showcase manmade, human-powered gondolas down the New River. Teams of three – two mates and a captain – will take on the task of task of designing, building and rowing these creative crafts down a .33 mile course between Huizenga Plaza and Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Interested gondoliers can apply online at www.redbullusa.com/candola now through January 31, 2012. Registration is free, but only 30 teams will be chosen to participate, so entrants should make sure their gondola stands out. The craft’s design and creativity key criteria for selection. Teams will score some extra wings if they include a certain 8.4-oz. can in the watercraft’s design.
Entrants need not worry about mastering the skill of making the fastest gondola. Time is just one of the factors the judges take into consideration. Creativity and showmanship play a big part into which group gets crowned with the title, “Big Bambino.” To win over the amoré and support of the crowd and the judges, each team will perform a 30-second skit before race time. There will also be a “people’s choice” vote for teams to compete for another prize at the end.
While all boats must actually float, there are a few other water safety regulations required before castoff. All boats must be entirely human-powered – no motors or stored energy permitted – and cannot exceed 100 pounds (without passengers). Boats must be between six and twelve feet long and at least two feet above water, with a maximum of six feet tall. Vessels should also be made using lightweight and environmentally safe materials, since while gondolas are intended to stay afloat, it’s not likely all will do so and the water must be kept safe for its inhabitants. Strong swimming skills are also required by all aboard…in case they go overboard.
So come on, float a few ideas with your friends and get involved! For more information on how to apply and to find a full list of rules about Red Bull Candola, visit www.redbullusa.com/candola.
