Room Service: ACQUALINA Resort & Spa

acqualina-resort-&-spa-room-service-fashion-poet-word-in-fashion

Welcome to this month’s Room Service where The Fashion Poet and I take you on a tour of one of Miami’s most fashionable hotels: Acqualina Resort & Spa. Nestled on 4 1/2 acres in Sunny Isles this oceanfront hotel also doubles up as residences. In fact, 188 of the rooms are residences and the other 98 are guest rooms and suites. If you’re looking for a hotel that feels right at home and is away from the South Beach scene, then you need to check in here. Wait it gets better… The Acqualina Spa By ESPA is also located within the hotel and they are renowned for having some of the best spa treatments. I got to try the ESPA ultimate anti-aging facial. Jennifer Lopez and Madonna are big fans of this treatment.

We stayed in a one-bedroom suite, which also had a den that featured a convertible twin size bed. We felt right at home since it was so spacious it felt like a home. The room totals 1430 sq. feet and comes with an oceanfront view terrace. The view was amazing; I truly enjoyed the sunset. That is my favorite time light of the day being that I’m a photographer. The room has a giant livingroom space, two flat-screen TVs, gourmet kitchen stocked with Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator/freezer so you can prepare home cooked meals, designer granite countertops, Italian limited-edition cabinets, a microwave and dishwasher. In the bathroom there’s a Jacuzzi whirlpool tub which I got to enjoy this time minus the bubble bath, glass-enclosed shower, marble flooring, double sinks and a custom vanity area. I enjoyed my stay here and would definitely come back.

Halloween & Day of the Dead

halloween-day of the dead- miami- word in fashion- fashion- betsy johnson- makeup

I have always loved the make up of Day of the Dead and decided that this year I would finally do the costume. I had Deisy Rodriguez transform me. I wanted to document the process so if your interested in doing the make up yourself you can or realize as I did that I would need a pro to do it for me so Deisy is my girl.

The Process:

All make up is waterproof which is a good thing living in Miami and the heat factor (sweating situations).

Apply white make up with a sponge preferably. A brush can leave streaks while the sponge applies make up evenly. White make up should go all around the face, neck and ears. Make sure to apply to eyebrows as well.

Deisy uses a fan to dry the make up so that it prevents any of the colors from mixing during the process. If you don’t have a fan you can use a blow dryer with cool air.

halloween-day of the dead- miami- word in fashion- fashion- betsy johnson- makeup

For the eyes use a waterproof eye liner gel so that it does not fade out easily. On each eye draw a circle. Once circle is drawn then you fill in with the black eye liner gel. The next step is to get a red eye shadow so that you can blend into the black eye lids to make it a maroon color. Make sure the outline of the circle does not show. This effect makes the eye look more sunken in and that creepy dead look.

The trick is to constantly blend the colors to create the effect you want.

Now that one eye is complete and has more of the dead look we move onto the other eye which we design a flower on. The eye with the design will have the same look as the other eye only with a design to outline the eye. With an eyeliner pencil draw a flower. Once the flower outline is drawn you fill in (you can choose any color of eye liner pencil to give the flower color). Again make sure to continue to blend colors.

When designing on the nose you can make the shape of an upside down heart. The top part of the heart will be on the bottom of your nose.

When designing the mouth you can do with a black eyeliner pencil as you would like and then highlight the outline of the pencil with brown eye shadow to make it look more intense and with the dead look.

Any other decorative design around the face you can free hand and do with eyeliner pencils.

I would not attempt to do this myself as I realized it is a process and would probably mess up a few times. I love this costume and am happy with the result. I will be calling Deisy to do my Halloween make up for sure.

Get Familiar: Lauren Martinez/ Cry Baby

Fashion-DJ-Music-Miami-New York-Cry Baby

My friend Lauren was just in town and I caught up with her to see what she has been up to and so you can get familiar with her. I have known Lauren for sometime now and she has always been very fashionable. We would see each other in nightclubs mostly. Miami is so big on nightlife that you at some point get sucked in by it. It’s always fun to dress up and go listen to some great music and even see your favorite DJ. I love that Lauren has found her passion in music and still gets decked out to spin, as she is known as DJ Cry Baby.

WIF: What got you into fashion? How do you go about your personal style evolving?

LM: My mother always owned a store and when I was little I always helped her out. When I turned 18 we opened a high-end boutique here in Miami and Los Angeles as well. After that I opened a boutique with my best friend in Miami. After working in retail for 13 years as much as I loved it I found it was time for me to move on. As for my style evolving I feel that music always made me want to change my style. It has always guided me as to what I want to wear. It’s something about what I may be listening to at the time that inspires me to dress the way I dress.

WIF: What drew you into becoming a DJ?

LM: I have always had a lot of friends in music and for some reason it did not occur to me. I know that I loved it and wanted to be part of it but didn’t know how. One day my really good friend Jona was like “Why don’t you trying doing this?” So he just gave me a turntable and didn’t even teach me. He told me this is the cross fader and this is the main volume. From that day on I could not let it go and had to do it. I the gave my 2 week notice at work and I moved to New York.

WIF: Why did you move to New York being that you have such a big music and club scene right here in Miami?

LM: Well, unfortunately when I first started to tell people what I was doing nobody was taking me serious. I knew that I was serious and have a passion for it. The first few people I told where guys and they all said the same thing, girls shouldn’t DJ. I though that’s it… That just fueled my fire and I have to do this. I practice every day, learn and get better. I also have a lot of friends in the music scene in New York that where very supportive and told me to move. They where willing to help me, so I did. As soon as I moved I had instant support and was getting booked at parties and nights at different places.

Fashion-DJ-Music-Miami-New York-Cry Baby

WIF: Have you found it to be challenging to learn and put your sets together?

LM: Definitely, it’s really hard. DJing you can play from song to song but I like to mix a lot and that’s not easy. It has taken me time to learn and timing in music is really important. If you don’t bring in a song at the right time you mess up everyone’s vibe. My first few gigs I had my share of train wrecks but I did not let it break me down. I went home and I practiced and pinned point where my mistakes where. That’s another thing that I love about DJing it’s always a challenge. If I become a lot better I will still always have more to learn.

WIF: What are your goals in the long run as a DJ?

LM: I want to play live and incorporate midi controllers and play live sets. I also started producing and just now am understanding the program and working on some stuff that I want to put out. I am just having so much fun and truly love what I do.

WIF: Are you planning on staying in NYC or you plan to be back in Miami?

LM: For now I am in New York, I am getting so much support there and it’s where I need to be for now.

WIF: Would you like to be signed by a label?

LM: I definitely want to stay underground. I would not mind being signed by a smaller label.

WIF: How did you come up with your DJ name Cry Baby?

LM: I guess you have to know me to understand why the name is so fitting. A friend of mine said it to me one time joking and everyone said that had to be my name. It’s catchy and growing on me.

If you’re in New York definitely check out one of Cry Baby’s house music sets. You can also find her on:

Floral & Lace

Miami-Fashion-Zara-Gucci-Fall

A fellow blogger Amiga and I where out shopping the other and she mentioned to me that I gravitate to floral prints a lot and she is right. There is something about flowers that I love and I found a fab pair of floral pants at Zara the other day w great fall colors. Of course being weak when I go into that store I had to get them and I paired it w a pretty lace top and black heels w chain detailing around the ankle (Got them on sale for $15, yes at Zara). I love rocking a big purse now and then and My Gucci bag is great, I can dress it up or down which is a plus. I’m ready for this weekend and all the fun outtings I have planned. Hope you have a stylish and fun weekend too. I’m at Jump #7, wonder how many it will take to Jump with Mister Steve Aoki?

Get Familiar: The Minagorri Sisters

Shoes-Heels-Miami-Designer

Miami-Sister-Fashion-Boutique

Get Familiar: The Minagorri Sisters

I recently met up with these three fashionable sisters Monica, Michelle and Marianne Minagorri at Mina Boutique-Miami Beach. We got to talk about their love for fashion, there individual styles and what Mina Boutique is all about.

WIF: How was it growing up so close in age, being such fashionable sisters with such different styles?

Mina Sisters: Fun, we definitely went through each other’s closets, a lot of fighting for clothes but we definitely have different styles. Mari was always the sporty but also very classic one of the three. The three of us are all so different from our bodies to our hair. We definitely all found our own style. Michelle was always a little bit more glam and Monica is more of the Audrey Hepburn type. We really got into fashion as we where growing up as well as arts, shows and modeling classes. Being around a lot of girls and each others friends while dressing up together it just evolved from there.

WIF: Being into fashion, who or what designers are you influenced by?

Michelle: I love Missoni I like the pattern and I am also feeling Marni I like the lines and cuts because it’s a little edgier. I see Monica and Mari more influenced by Coco Chanel. Who influences me is always changing and it’s from everywhere depending on the season.

Monica: Coco Channel has always been a very big influence for me. I also love the Alexander Mc Queen colors and the Valentino Red.

Mari: Sounds Good. Something about Mina and what we do is support the locals designers and what they bring to us. We like to mix the local designers with different designers that are hot.

WIF: Where do you see the Miami fashion scene evolving too now that it is picking up steam with all the local designers, bloggers and events taking place?

Monica: I think that is important for Miami because we have so much culture here and the women are beautiful. With the bloggers involved it’s really picking up.

Michelle: Miami has always been a beautiful place. People always come down to go to the beaches, shopping and to enjoy the nightlife scene. There is a lot of culture in Miami, and we are starting to see areas like Midtown, Design District and Brickell take off with high end designer boutiques, art galleries and stores. I’m excited to see how the fashion and art scene will evolve in Miami in the next few years.

Monica: I think our generation really has it, all our friends are now fashion designers or stylist out of New York and Miami really needed that.

Michelle: They are all going but bringing it back home. We all have studied here so it’s nice to see everyone bring it back to Miami. We have a friend who is an amazing stylist that left and is a great example of someone who brings it back home and that’s cool to see. We are starting to see a lot of movement now with a lot of new designers. We are now carrying designers from Hawaii, India, Columbia.

Monica: It used to be us going out to look for the designers and now they are coming to us and knocking on the door and calling us, any way they can reach us which is nice.

Michelle: The majority of the stuff we carry we try and keep it at a good price. We want to offer unique pieces and of high quality and so far we have been able to do it.

Monica: I think the fact that we are all so different as well is also important. I think any woman can relate to at least one of our styles.

WIF: I think people today as shoppers are also looking for the experience and feeling good about shopping somewhere where they will be treated well. Have you been noticing that as well?

Marianne: That’s our biggest thing. When the girls come here we want to get to know you. I see what you like and if we don’t have it at the store we will go out and find it for you. We also go to your house and do free home deliveries. We have clients that come in and we set up a time to come in with their kids while she sips on wine and tries on clothes. We want our clients to feel comfortable.

Miami-Sister-Fashion-Boutique

WIF: What is the future plans for MINA?

Marianne: We are thinking of expanding the store, we want to get mini mina’s and even Mina for men.

Michelle: We definitely want to expand and open new locations. We are just trying to figure out what our approach will be. WE would love to go international because of the real estate side of both Monica & I we have clients from all over Europe and Latin America. It’s funny because they will spend there morning at Bal Harbour then come to our store afterwards and spend the afternoon shopping with Mari. They love it because we have made friends with them.

WIF: How do you ladies choose your Mina Mavens?

Mina Sisters: Marianne: Michelle is the one that came up with the idea.
Monica: What we do is once a month I get my sisters on a call. What we look for is a girl that other girls will look up too. A good role model, someone that stands out in the community. Weather she is a teacher, a journalist, to the famous actress. Whatever it is she does as long as she is very good at and sets a good example. My sisters and I sit down and then we choose her. Michelle: We just come across these amazing girls that we end up becoming friends with and then the more we get to know them we think of how they can be a maven. We actually had a contest once and had an overwhelming response.
Monica: It’s real fun because it’s like we get our own Barbie doll. We get to dress them up and do hair & make up for the shoot.

I had a great time chatting with the Mina girls. Definitely go check out there boutique. It’s a great place to shop for any fashionista. You never know if you too can be a Mina Maven.

I don’t alway wear sneakers but these I had to have. Locally my go to sneaker spot Shoe Gallery still had my size. Here are some images of me hanging out in my Nikes.

db Bistro Moderne

db-Bistro-Modern-feature-restaurant-food-foodporn-miami-high-quality-luxury-dinner

During my stay at Hotel Beaux Arts with Annie for our project Room Service we had dinner at db Bistro Modern. I love to eat and got great reviews from a few friends that have dined there.

Db Bistro Moderne is a James Beard Foundation award-winning restaurant in which Chef Daniel Boulud blends traditional French cuisine with the flavors of the American market.

I started my dinner with a chilled cucumber soup, which was quite refreshing and goes great with the Miami heat. Next, I had the swordfish that was divine and a healthy option. I was doing so good on my food choices till yes, dessert. I had the pandan-scented rice pudding along with many other dessert dishes that I should not have done. I admit I gave in to my sweet tooth. That’s what 2 a days on the treadmill are for, right? I definitely recommend for you to come and enjoy lunch, dinner, happy hour or even try their Miami Spice menu.

Falling around with Peplum

Shoes-YSL-Miami-Fashion-Girl-Forever21-UrbanOutfitters

Keeping up with fall in Miami is not so easy thanks to it being 90 degrees out at all times. So we work it out as best possible when it comes time for fashion trends. I found this cute peplum top while on an adventure at Dolphin Mall. It was so expensive $10 can you believe it (sarcasm). I paired it with my leather like shorts from Forever21 and my YSL heels. I like the zipper detail on the back of the top and shorts and let’s not forget my fringtastic purse cause I am obsessed with fringe. I will warn you that if you’re going to take pictures with your peplum top and there is a breeze, well it may not cooperate. On a positive note it is a great top to wear out if your feeling hungry and want to camouflage your tummy after your meal. I also don’t suggest trying to jump in YSL heels, only because I was quite skerd this time for the shoes and myself, lol.

Thanks to KarGar for snapping my pictures always. We almost got a ticket this time till I ran over to the meter maid and had to justify to him why we should not get a ticket. I told him my meter was on a diet and not hungry for our money but now we would force feed it.

Till zee next outfit peeps…

Room Service: Hotel Beaux Arts

room-service-hotel-beaux-arts-hotel-travel-stay-comfort-luxury-enjoyment

For this weeks Room Service Annie and I ventured off to the modern & stylish Hotel Beaux Arts in Downtown, Miami. I truly enjoyed my experience at this hotel. I pay attention to details and I must say there where plenty to take note of.  Every room is loaded with high tech equipment such as an I Pad, a small Television in the mirror of the bathroom, remote control curtains, and even an I Phone charger. I like the very condo feel of the room because it felt as if I was at home and the view of Miami is amazing as all the rooms have great views of our city.

Annie and I experienced all the great things to do at the hotel. We where welcomed with a nice cocktail by the pool that has great areas to lounge around and definitely get your tan on.  Then we ventured to the virtual golf, bowling alley and even snuck a peak at the basketball court. There is way more things to do such as the theater to watch movies, grab a drink at the bar, enjoy a fab dinner at db Bistro Moderne or head over to the spa and salon for some pampering.

When we wrapped up our day I headed over to my room and got to unwind. I sat down for a bit and turned on that gigantic plasma television and flicked threw some channels while zipping some wine. I then realized that it was late and time to shower and hit the sack. The bathroom was quite dreamy, from the shower to the great products I felt relaxed and ready to sleep like a baby and boy did I in that amazing fluffy bed.  Only thing I did not get to enjoy was a bubble bath, lol.

Next week on Thursday make sure to check out my post on the hotel restaurant db Bistro Moderne to see what I ate. I learned that Annie as do I have major sweet tooth’s and we did not help each other at all when it came time for dessert. I will give you my review along with pictures of what I ate.

Make sure to check out Annie’s experience too (http://thefashionpoet.com/)

Fall Preview With Saks Fifth Avenue

Mayleen-saks-fifth-avenue-post-feature

This past Friday Annie, Karla & Muahz where invited to spend some time at Saks Fifth Avenue – Dadeland Mall. We got a preview of the fall trends along with a tour of the Contemporary Department, which is expanding in November just in time for the holidays. I love shopping and I personally love going to places where I get treated well and which makes it a better shopping experience. Anthony walked us through the Contemporary Department and showed us all the fab clothes. I can’t pick a favorite because I loved everything from leather, studding and sheer with mixed prints. I wanted to buy everything I saw!

We then went to get mini makeovers. I got to experience the Giorgio Armani treatment. Ellen was great; she treated me like a queen and showed me all the new colors in eye shadows, lipsticks and lip-gloss. We had a great time. I am picky with make up and Giorgio Armani felt nice on my face. Nothing felt to cakey which is what I really dislike and get turned off with when it comes to makeup.

Next, we each got to pick an outfit to write about that reflects our style. I really like to dress up and also rock sneakers every now and then. I wanted to be able to show how you can wear a dress in two different ways. I chose a leather dress by Parker, which I was drawn to from the moment I saw it. This dress is perfect for Miami because it incorporates the leather trend in a way we can actually rock here due to our one-week cold weather. I really like how I can dress it up with Christian Louboutin booties that touch on more details we will see in the fall such as studs, fish net and zippers. I am obsessed with this dress and shoes. I wish I could have kept it!

I then switched up my shoes to my Jeremy Scott x Adidas Wings “Rainbow” from Shoe Gallery. I love the wing detail on this shoe not to mention how comfy and stylish they are as well. I think the sneaker gives the dress a fun new look. As you all know I end my outfit post with a jump. I thought about not jumping because I was at Saks but that’s what I do, so here goes… Ready, Set, Jump!!

Special thanks to Samanta, Anthony, Ellen & Saks Fifth Avenue – Dadeland for such a great day and hosting us.
