Get Familiar: Joel Meinholz

joel meinholz wit-word-in-town

I caught up with Joel Meinholz while he was going about his day. Getting things ready for a BBQ that night, right after doing the final touches on a flyer for a party in San Francisco. The phone rings… After he finished that phone call we jump in my car because his car is at the shop and that was the only way to catch-up with him…

If this sounds kind of crazy, well that’s the way Joel gets everything done every day. While he keeps this crazy schedule, he still makes time for his first love: Skateboarding… His foot is numb but he still putting some footy together for the HOPPS promo commercial… Nothing stops Joel. Read our conversation after the jump. Word!

TWIT: Lets talk a walk down history, When did you move to Miami? JM: I don’t know… I really don’t know. I think it may have been in ’96 but I’m not sure. I was 20 years old so we’ll put that back at 15 years a go when I moved to Boca, Florida. What is it right now? It’s 2011 so that takes me back 10 years… I think I moved down here in 1995.

TWIT: Since ’95 what has been the biggest change you have made? JM: Miami has changed. That’s the biggest change I’ve seen since then… I don’t know…

TWIT: I’m talking more on a personal level. What has been the biggest change you have made? JM: Being comfortable with who I am. Basically that’s it… Knowing that what it is and what I do, it’s true to who I am… Believing in that. Not letting anyone delegate what’s cool, right or wrong. I let my heart lead the way of my life and where I’m.

TWIT: In other words, you have learned how to be comfortable in your own skin…

TWIT: Skating: Were you ever really serious about skating? JM: I was always serious about skating because it’s a fucking inner passion to be the best within your self! Yes, to be better with your self you have to be serious and go do it… You know?

TWIT: The word I should have used to describe it is focused? JM: I was always focused in skateboarding. I was completely focused. Skateboarding was my life. In the years that past I’ve gone through different changes in my life that have lead me to where I’m at now but I wan to just enjoy at this point. Most people don’t have a passion that they can turn to for entertainment and fulfillment. Most of them look to different directions. Skateboarding is the way I do that. I don’t take it serious. I don’t want too. I just want to smile, have fun and get hyped with my homies…

TWIT: Has your set up changed in the last 5 years? JM: My set up? The set up that I skate? Yeah! It has gone from a 7.75 to an 8.25. I’m a bigger dude and it’s more comfort.

TWIT: What trucks are you skating? JM: Fuck, what do you expect? Indies Yo! Hahaha. Since day one! That’s what you have to go with.

TWIT: What are you rolling with? JM: What am I rolling with for wheels? OJ 2’s what!? Shorty, Shorty wheels. That’s what I wanted when I was a little kid…

TWIT: Where you like the second or third Pro skater in Miami? JM: I was never a Pro Skateboarder when I got to Miami. I think I turned Pro about 2 years a go because John Newport ill ass mother fucker hooked me up with Rasa Libre and Matt Fields then put me on. That’s kind of like how it happened.

I just skated… I was completely hooked up. I never got to the point where I had my name on a board before or maybe I did but I was just too fucked up all the time back then…

TWIT: In other words you skated for the fun of it for a long time. My question is to you does being Pro really mean something? JM: No man! I never skated to be Pro. I never took skateboarding on that way to be Pro. I skated because I wanted to skate. Being Pro it’s cool but it doesn’t meant anything…

TWIT: We’re not taking away from being a Pro because there are good things about being a Pro skater but there is life without being a Pro skater. JM: Man, skateboarding is life in itself! You can collect a check and do it that way. Live that way. I guess that’s being a Pro skateboarder but Fuck meng, I really don’t know. I just Fucking enjoy it. I just enjoy skateboarding… That’s it! Like if you’re Pro cool but I don’t know what that means… I guess Professional attitude!

TWIT: How is it to be a living skater in Miami because of the heat and humidity? JM: Skateboarding in Miami strengthens your passion because you get to keep on skating through the Florida heat you can do anything. You can go skate anywhere. It will make you stronger than anything. You can fuck with it. That’s what I’ve learned when I go out west to skate.

People out west are not trying to skate in the heat. I’m like what? This is no problem for me. That’s the thing, if you can skate in Miami, you can skate anywhere…

TWIT: Skating has led you to a few things. I know you have been a party promoter for a while, how did that get started? JM: I was an alcoholic and I ran out of money! I ran out of money so, people started offering me to bring some people out to their venues. I would make some money and free alcohol from it. Then I sobered up and made a business out of it… Now I’m doing that, you know…?

TWIT: Lets stop for one second, you said you sobered up; are you completely sober? JM: Yes, yes sir-e-bob… Sober as sober can be… Because any other way I wouldn’t be sober.

TWIT: How does it feel to be sober after such a challenging period of your life, being crazy and out of control? JM: I don’t know how it doesn’t. It’s either I’m sober, I move forward in life or that’s it… There is no anything else. You know…? It’s just like skating; it’s like whatever I feel… It’s like I’m doing it. That’s it! There is nothing else! It’s a focus point, that’s fucking it. We’re getting it done! I’m sober, I’m sober; there is no fucking around… If I’m partying, I’m partying; there is no fucking around… I’m going to be going 120%, 150% on whatever I’m going to do…

TWIT: Have you always been a person that whatever you put your mind too, you get done? JM: If I could stay focused, yeah…

TWIT: As we were driving around 71st Street some wild as Biker drove by. With a mini version of himself mounted on his back seat. It was Rad!

TWIT: You went from hosting parties to making a business out of it? JM: Basically…  You know what I did Man? I took these basic rules that I learned from being a skateboarder and self-promoting from skateboarding and applied them to the nightlife.

Then working the nightlife I took those skills that I learned from that and applied them back to skateboarding. They overlapped each other. That was my schooling on how to understand the marketing of an idea and a concept. How to deliver it and push it out there those two elements made what I do capable today…

No one thought me shit!

TWIT: You have taken the tenacity of a skater and put that to work on the night business? JM: I’m going to accomplish this trick. I’m going to bolls out to do this rail and fuck I don’t know if I’m going to land it but Hell am a fucking try it! You know what happens? As long as you try, you do! The only time you fail, it’s when you don’t try!

That’s the only time you fail, when you don’t try!

TWIT: Skateboarding teaches you a lot more than people think. It’s not just a board with four wheels… JM: Skateboarding is life! Is not just skateboarding. This will sound gay as shit but skateboarding allows you to find out who the fuck you are… If you let it…

It’s going to show your own will and strength of your inner person. No matter how much you commit and if you can figure out how to take all those things and rolled them over into life you can accomplish any goals you set out for your self! That’s what you have to do. You have to be like lets do this!

You can tell a lot by the way someone skates… People see it. Real reads real! That’s what’s up!

TWIT: Where are you today? JM: Where am I today? Haha, sitting in the car with you!

I don’t know where I’m at today…

TWIT: Where are you in your creative business side? JM: In the creative side I’m immersed in it. None stop 100% in it every day. Every day I want to create. Every day I want to accomplish. I get inspired from my surroundings. I may meet a person… What do you mean?

TWIT: Specifically talking about your events and the nights you’re promoting? JM: I’m putting a lot more focus in them. I’m taking what my one idea is. Taking it to multiple cities: San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, South by Southwest, New York City and Brooklyn. Making what I learned how to do and putting it in other cities. Just jamming it out there and doing what we know how to do!

TWIT: You’re taking an idea from skateboarding because skateboarding is what made it possible for you developing it and taking it to other cities… JM: I’m taking the vision and going, guys we can do it our selves; what’s up?…

Making it happen. Putting teams together in different cities and showing what we can do together. Branching like-minded people together to grow these ideas to the next level…

TWIT: Back to skateboarding: I know you skate hard and some times you get worked, are you recovering from any injuries right now? JM: I mean, if I’m not recovering from an injury, I’m not skating… Meng! Haha. Nah, you know?… I guess I’ve been hurt for the last couple of months were my foot has been completely numb. I can’t feel anything. I guess I have some cartilage or something. Bottom line: my foot has been numb. I have no board feel… That’s insane but I’m still trying to skate and that’s it.

Skateboarding it self, it’s like everyday; if I don’t go skate everyday…  I just don’t know. Skateboarding opens up my heart, my breathing, my thought pattern and it gets all my energy centered. To me it’s like a huge release…

TWIT: Skateboarding is your Zen? JM: Fuck yeah skateboarding is my Zen! When it’s good, it’s the best thing in the world. When it’s bad it’s bad. Again it’s like all or nothing… Basically that’s how I live my life all or nothing… I’m going for it! Fuck you! Fuck it! I’m going for it! Fuck everybody! Hey, lets make it all happen… You can either love it and that’s it! That’s what’s up…

TWIT: You’ve been through a lot of changes through out time, how do you feel about change? JM: We need change, you know?… Being scared of change is part of the stubbornness in my mind but I see as a weakness… You have to look at these things as a weakness. If you aren’t willing to accept, understand and be able to change you will continue being weak… That’s what’s up! There’s a lot going on. There’s a lot people don’t understand… You know?… You have to have the ability to look at other peoples view points, look at them and mold them to your view point then allow there view point to help you that way…

We have a lot of bla, bla, bla and bla going on. You’ve got me at a weird time…Hahaha. Some times I just answer questions with: Yeah, whatever… But not today…

TWIT: Anyone you would like to thank for supporting you or helping you? JM: That question… That question always gets asked at the end of conversations like this.

I would hate to leave anyone out. The reality is that a lot of people have helped me and inspired me through out the time. I would hope to have helped and inspired people too but if I were to list the people I would probably leave someone out… Those who have helped me you know who you are!

TWIT: What moves you to skate? What inspires you to skate? JM: The homies, meng! Just vibing-out with the right homies… That’s what gets me psyched to skate… The vibe the energy, that’s what gets me psyched to skate at the end of the day…

TWIT: Something people may not know about you?

JM: I’m not really an ASSHOLE!
